Although the name of this breed refers to Australia, the Australian Shepherd actually originated in the United States, developed by farmers in the 20th century to manage livestock. Its ancestors come from Basque dogs, brought to North America by shepherds in the 19th century. The breed then experienced growing popularity, especially after World War II, due to its versatility and intelligence, making the Australian Shepherd an excellent companion for cattle ranchers and a breed highly valued by families.
