It was particularly useful in the Cairngorms, a mountain range in Scotland, where it tracked prey hidden under piles of stones called "cairns." The word "cairn" in Gaelic means precisely these stacks of stones. The breed was standardized in the early 20th century thanks to breeder Captain Martin E. Haworth, who played a key role in its recognition.
