Crossed with local hunting dogs (English setters, Irish greyhounds, flat-coated retrievers), they gave birth to a breed capable of braving cold and choppy waters.

The early Chessies excelled in hunting ducks and geese, as well as tasks like fishing or harvesting oysters. Today, they are recognized for their sturdiness and love of water.
