The German Shepherd was created in 1889 by Captain Max von Stephanitz, with the goal of designing an ultra-competent dog for herding. By crossing herding dogs from central and southern Germany, he gave birth to a versatile breed. Quickly, the German Shepherd became a global star, used in police, military, search and rescue missions, and as a guide dog for people with disabilities.
