Braque du Bourbonnais

 🐾 History

The Braque du Bourbonnais is an ancient breed of hunting dog originating from the Bourbonnais region in France. This type of pointer has a long history, dating back at least to the 16th century, when it was used for hunting game birds and fur-bearing game. It is particularly valued for its excellent ability to track game and work in difficult terrain.

Unfortunately, the breed nearly disappeared in the early 20th century due to the mechanization of hunting and industrialization. Fortunately, a passionate breeder, Dr. Jean Dumas, revived the breed in the 1970s by crossing the last surviving specimens with French hunting dogs.

Today, the Braque du Bourbonnais is a breed appreciated by hunters and working dog enthusiasts, while remaining relatively rare outside specialized circles.

 🐕 Breed Profile

The Braque du Bourbonnais is a medium-sized dog with a slender and athletic build. Its coat is short, usually fawn or pearl gray, often with darker spots. It has a gentle and expressive gaze that reflects its intelligent and attentive character.

It is a dog with an excellent sense of smell and a great ability to work in different types of terrain, including forests, meadows, and marshes. It is often described as very gentle and close to its owner, while remaining extremely effective as a hunting dog. Its versatility makes it an excellent pointing dog and a loyal companion in work and at home.
